Census day is August 9 – and it’s going digital, including compulsory names

Held every five years, this will be the first time the Census will be mostly online, with over 15 million people expected to fill in the form digitally.

From August 1, you and village residents should receive a letter from the ABS with a 12-digit Census Login and instructions. Want to order a paper form? You’ll need to request one by calling 1300 820 275 with your login number.

In some places (presumedly remote), households will get a paper form upfront, with the option to complete it online.

It’s also the first year names and addresses will be compulsory. Previously, you could opt whether or not to give your personal details.

The information will also be kept on file for four years. The ABS has promised the data will be kept in a separate database for security and be destroyed in August 2020.
