WA, NSW and VIC Government regulation increasing – need for an industry rethink

2012 continues the accelerated prosecution by State Governments of the village sector, with just a few operators and the RVA doing the heavy lifting to create balance in the views that Government is receiving. WA has ‘sweeping’ legislation being prepared ‘to give residents the tools they need to deal effectively with management of retirement villages’, according to Commerce Minister Simon O’Brien. Longer cooling off periods, collective appeal rights and limits to the time recurrent charges have to be paid after departure are planned. Since Christmas the NSW Government is canvassing strata village residents to make submissions on ‘the current laws that fail meet the needs of today’s residents’. The Victorian Government released yesterday the initial submissions to its village contract disclosure review.
