Aged care residents relocated as home catches fire
Roshana Care Group has told The Weekly SOURCE that a fire on Sunday night was caused by an incident with an exhaust vent, and resulted in 33 residents temporarily relocating.
The fire at Graceland Manor, a 45-bed aged care home in Elsternwick, 9km southeast of the Melbourne CBD, affected the upper-floor roof area.
Emergency services rushed to the facility after the blaze was reported just before 10pm on Friday, 27 February 2026.
Residents were evacuated to a nearby park, with neighbours reporting many were distressed. Witnesses said they saw streams of people coming out of the facility, and staff had to lay some residents on mattresses on the ground, The Herald Sun reported.
A nurse and two residents were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.
Senior management on site
Dr Rosh Jalagge, CEO of Roshana Care Group, told The Weekly SOURCE that no injuries were reported, and residents are being accommodated at alternative aged care facilities or other suitable accommodation.
Senior leaders travelled to the home on Saturday to “assess the damage, develop a restoration plan, and determine the safest and most appropriate pathway to return residents to their home,” Rosh said.
“At this stage, it is too early to confirm the timeframe for restoration and reopening.
“The site will remain closed while relevant authorities, specialist contractors, and our internal teams complete safety assessments and remediation planning.”
Authorities said it was very lucky that the premises had a fire indicator panel which gave early warning of the fire.
2025 acquisition
Roshana Care acquired Graceland Manor in November last year, the operator’s third Melbourne home.
Last month, The Weekly SOURCE reported on Roshana Care Group’s expansion into South Australia with the purchase of the 80-bed Lerwin Residential Care facility, 80km southeast of central Adelaide.
The group’s aged care portfolio now spans 17 homes across WA, SA, NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
Roshana is also building its healthcare capability, with three GP practices operating and seven more planned by June 2026. The goal is to deliver “hospital-in-home” and “home-hospital” programs through state partnerships, with pilots planned.
