Battle between states and Commonwealth looms as 680 NSW hospital patients wait on aged care bed

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park has taken aim at the Federal Government, saying it is "unacceptable" for state-funded hospital patients to be stuck in beds waiting for federally-funded aged care beds or NDIS placements.

Data from NSW Health shows there are 538 patients in NSW hospital beds waiting for an NDIS placement, and 680 patients waiting for a bed in an aged care facility.

On average, NSW hospital beds are being occupied for an average of 52 days per patient past the estimated date of discharge.

“The notion of someone waiting in a hospital bed for over 50 days over their estimated date of discharge is not acceptable – it’s bad for the system but it’s also very bad for the patients,” the NSW Health Minister said.

“The reality is that this is having a significant cause of bed block and severely impacting patient flow in our hospitals.”

The NSW Health Minister is expected to discuss the matter with the Federal Health Minister Mark Butler on Friday, The Daily Telegraph reported. It's expected bed block in NSW hospitals will be a significant part of negotiations over the National Health Reform Agreement, under which Commonwealth health funding to the states is determined.

In June, the NSW Government announced a $480.7 million package to try to stop 290,000 hospital emergency department (ED) visits annually and get older hospital patients, ready to be discharged and requiring care, into aged care beds.
