Five aged care residents have been asked to move out of their homes by 13 October to make way for new residents who require higher levels of care.
Gary Buckingham, 71, moved into Harbourside Haven Gardens Residential Aged Care Home in Shoal Bay six years ago under a tenancy arrangement, the ABC reported. He has been offered accommodation at a nearby village, but says $660 a fortnight, plus up-front costs, is unaffordable.
Harbourside Haven Gardens is operated by Not For Profit organisation Port Stephens Veterans Aged Citizens Aged Care (PSVCAC), and was set up with the Men of League Foundation about 15 years ago as a low-care hostel.
“We aim to effectively address the increasing number of people with complex high-care needs in the Port Stephens region,” PSVCAC said in a statement.
“This move will play a vital role in enhancing the financial viability of PSVCAC, positioning us for greater stability in the future.”
They said they are flexible on the final date that the men transition to new homes.
PSVCAC closed its Bill King Aged Care Facility at Fingal Bay earlier this year due to staff shortages and financial issues.
