St Basil's NSW/ACT closes Kensington aged care home

In January 2024, Not For Profit aged care provider St Basil’s NSW/ACT announced it will close its aged care home in Kensington, in Sydney's southeast, 4km from the city centre.

A statement from the provider said the home is closing because its buildings are no longer fit for purpose.

"Whilst the clinical care of residents has been maintained, the physical environment has been challenging and the building is now outdated," said James Jordan, Chairman of St Basil’s NSW/ACT

“Reviews conducted by the Aged Care Regulatory Body and our own Quality Team, resulted in the identification of environmental compliance gaps."

St Basils’ management will work with residents and their families to relocate them to another home of their choice.

In May 2023, St Basil's NSW/ACT closed its Annandale aged care home, and later sold it for $17 million.

St Basil's Kensington is the latest in a long line of aged care home closures. In the nearly nine months between 1 June 2023 and 9 February 2024, 23 aged care homes closed in Australia. Only 16 opened. A total of 1,113 beds closed during the period, and 1,633 were added to the system, a net gain of 520 beds.
