‘Silver tsunami’: important Property Council/Urbis report reveals shortfall in seniors’ housing without better Govt planning

1 min read

Top-ranked South Australia achieved a rating of just 52.8 out of 100 for its retirement planning policy with the other states all trailing behind.

The Property Council’s Executive Director of Retirement Living Ben Myers says without changes to planning policy to have land available for retirement villages and other forms of seniors’ housing, baby boomers may find themselves with limited options.

“Issues such as zoning and overly restrictive height controls can inhibit the redevelopment potential of existing communities to ensure the expectations of Australian retirees are met,” he said.

The Report Card includes four recommendations for reforming planning schemes:

  1. Increase land availability
  2. Support more commercially viable developments
  3. Improve alignment with market needs
  4. Elevate retirement living to state importance in planning schemes.

All great, but who will listen?
