In 2006 the residents of Caloundra Gardens (QLD) won a 20 years battle to have their village deregistered as a retirement village under the Act to escape the financial exploitation of the lease back arrangements. Suddenly they had teenagers running all over the place and noise, the overtaking of the pool and recreational areas and less careful use of common equipment leading to frequent repairs. The older residents applied to have the village reregistered as a retirement village but were told it would cost $250,000; instead Body Corporate Chairman Ted Jones (pictured) decided to go to the Human Rights Commission requesting an age discrimination exemption. On March 23 the Commission ruled in their favour to allow residents aged 50+ only.
