We hear that making an appointment with a GP in Hervey Bay on Queensland's Fraser Coast is very difficult, and getting an aged care bed is even harder. In the latest allocation Bundaberg got 120 beds and Gympie 34 but none were allocated to the Fraser Coast. Not For Profit operator Torbay Retirement Village is building a $75 million village including 48 aged care beds at a cost of $14 million or $290,000 per bed. As the government contribution is based on a cost of $108,000 Torbay Village is holding off on an extra 15 beds. CEO Philip Parry says: Were building beds because that's what we do. Were a charity. But economically it's not viable.
