Recently retired CEO of Baptist Care (NSW) and recognised innovator in the sector, Dr. June Heinrich AM, this week predicted that long stay aged care will soon be a thing of the past for most facilities. In a round table discussion she predicted aged care will be dominated by short stay/multiple admissions, with five services offered:
1. Transitional beds (out of acute/hospital care)
2. Dementia – advanced stages
3. Terminal care – e.g. Parkinson’s
4. Palliation
5. Respite
The result will be moving the care responsibility back on to the family – or if a village resident – on to the village community, including the operator.

The McCrindle Baynes Village Survey of 10,600 residents revealed 93% rated care onsite being available on site as ‘important to extremely important’. How will existing village managers handle the extra responsibility and the operators the additional regulation and cost?
