Following the Quakers Hill care facility fire, allegedly deliberately lit by a care nurse, the NSW Government has made sprinklers mandatory in care facilities. Operators have until January 2016 to comply; total number: 600 facilities/24,000 beds. As Nieves Murray, CEO of Not For Profit IRT, is quoted: We are spending $375,000 this year and $750,000 in 2013 and the remainder the year after, in order to have this operational but it is a $3 million dollar spend and I think a lot of smaller operators could find themselves in trouble without some financial help.
