Keynote speaker Paul Klaassen from Washington DC founded Sunrise Senior Living in 1981 at age 25 and has since built 460 communities across four countries, with 51,000 residents and 42,000 employees. After averaging 20 to 30 new communities a year, he stated they have ceased all new development and retrenched all development staff because of the global financial crisis.
