Australian aged care robot developer Andromeda secures $23M US boost

1 min read

Andromeda, the Sydney-based startup behind the Abi companion robot, has landed $23 million in US funding – lifting its valuation to around $100 million.

Already on trial in aged care homes nationwide, Abi uses AI and machine learning to provide companionship and support. The robot can recognise faces, respond to questions in 90 languages, and even be programmed with residents’ daily schedules.

The additional $23 million will be used to fast track Andromeda’s work in Australia, expanding their team and production, and introducing upgrades, including introducing autonomous navigation and improved audio. Andromeda will also establish a footprint in the US, employing animation robotics specialists onboard.

“This is where we see the future of robotics going and we’ll be at the forefront of it to benefit everyone who spends time with Abi and to conquer loneliness,” said 25-year-old CEO and Co-founder Grace Brown. “We see the effect Abi has every day, supporting care teams and sparking joy for residents in aged care homes.”

The new investors include Forerunner Ventures, Rethink Impact, and Main Sequence Ventures, all known for backing female-led ventures.

Aged care providers Lutheran Homes Barossa and Benetas have been trialling Abi, with positive results.

In late 2024, Brown set a goal of having 100 robots in aged care homes within 18 months. This latest round of funding could help her reach that target.
