Nursing group Swifts Creek Bush Nursing Centre has bought a two-hectare farm in VIC’s East Gippsland to build sorely-needed seniors’ independent living accommodation.
Sue Carroll (pictured, left, with Kath Smith), manager of the Swifts Creek Bush Nursing Centre, used money collected through community fundraisers, bequests, and donations over the past 10 years to buy the deceased estate.
The plan is to build nine two-bedroom independent living units and one for short-term crisis accommodation on the site, which is 300m northeast of the town centre. Swifts Creek is between Omeo and Ensay, 379km east of Melbourne
"(Some are) not nursing home sort of ready, but they can't manage their properties or their large houses and then they have to sell up and leave the community," Sue told the ABC.
Swifts Creek Bush Nurse Centre has started applying for several Australian Government grants to fund the construction of the units.
