A regional NSW council has increased its contribution to an aged care staff housing project, shifting an earlier funding arrangement.

Gilgandra Shire Council, operating 442km west of Sydney, and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing were set to contribute $2.5 million each to the project when an Aged Care Capital Assistance Program grant was awarded in 2024.

However, since then, the Council has pledges a further $500,000 to the project and appointed Dubbo-based Haft Constructions Pty Ltd builder. Work commenced in January 2026.

Gilgandra Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Doug Batten (pictured above) says the project will future-proof and grow the Gilgandra Region, supporting the town’s ‘Gilgandra Region Towards 5000 Community Health Vision’, aimed at providing integrated health services and equity in the local community.

“The new accommodations will assist us in strengthening infrastructure available to support health and well-being,” he said.

“I would like to express my appreciation on behalf of Council for the continued support of all stakeholders and the community for this and our upcoming projects.”

The project

The project is aimed providing much-needed residential housing for aged care workers in Gilgandra and supporting the growth of local aged care services by helping attract and retain staff. Currently, there is limited rental housing available in Gilgandra.

The project includes:

  • A dual occupancy development featuring two three-bedroom dwellings within Aero Park Estate; and
  • A five-unit accommodation complex with 4 x 2 bedroom, 1 x 1 bedroom, and 1 studio to be constructed in Myrtle Street.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2026.
