Terang is one of the oldest rural towns in the state and a charity Terang Aged Care Future has been exploring options for senior housing since Lyndoch Living closed its May Noonan aged care facility in July 2023 and the number of aged care beds dropped from 55 to 15.
Terang & Mortlake Health Service's Mount View Aged Care Facility in Terang, 212km southwest of the state capital, has the remaining 15 beds and it has been decided it is unviable to build a new aged care facility.
Committee chair Chris O'Connor (pictured) told an information session at the town's civic hall on 25 November an assisted living retirement village is now the best solution, with Not For Profit organisations already inquiring.
He said it would explore options to buy a development site and begin discussions with developers and providers.
"There's nothing really like a retirement village within the whole shire. But it provides a pretty sustainable model and is quite a good investment,”said Chris.
"At the moment, those wanting to downsize must move out of the area into Colac or Warrnambool."
He said it was a solution the group could pursue "straight away" while also looking at expanding the number of aged care beds at Mount View in the medium term.
