Warning: Electric mobility scooter caused fatal fire at Adelaide retirement village

1 min read

The reason for the ferocious fire that killed 83-year-old Trevor Fielden, a resident of Crestview Retirement Village in Hillcrest, 10km northeast of Adelaide's city centre, late on Monday night, has been revealed.

Tony Randello, CEO of Aveo Group, which owns and operates the retirement village, said "early reports from first responders indicate the fire was caused by a mobility scooter battery that was charging overnight."

Electric mobility scooters are increasing in popularity for seniors and in aged care homes because they are lightweight, with lithium batteries.

It is now understood that the deceased husband plugged his scooter in to recharge overnight before going to bed.

In Australia, more than 450 fires have been linked to lithium-ion batteries over the past 18 months, according to data provided by state fire departments.

Lithium-ion batteries are used to power light electric vehicles like e-scooters and e-bikes. Mobility scooters use either gel or lithium-ion batteries, with lithium-ion batteries being lighter and smaller and ideal for portable mobility scooters.

Two out of three retirement village units erupted in flames just after 10pm on Monday night. Trevor’s wife Grace, 81, managed to get out and was taken to hospital.

Neighbouring residents, who were evacuated from their units, said Trevor was a devoted husband.

“He pushed her (Grace) everywhere in her wheelchair; he will be missed,” she said.

Aveo said two other villas sustained damage in the fire and the company is supporting the residents of those villas to make alternative accommodation arrangements.

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to all emergency services personnel for their swift response. Aveo’s community team are providing counselling and support to residents, and the families of those impacted by this incident," Tony said.
