The first sod was turned on the development, which will include 52 independent living units and 128 aged care rooms next to the Leagues Club headquarters in western Sydney, last week.

The honours were done by legendary Penrith player Royce Simmons, who is the ambassador for the new complex named ‘The Royce’.

Mr Simmons signed up to put his name to the project after the Tulich family, who are developing the village, showed him how the finished site would look.

“Once I saw some of their other retirement villages I thought straight away that I wanted to be a part of this,” he said. “They’re great facilities and everything’s catered for. It blew my socks off.”

The village is due to open in December 2018.
