Data showing that COVID-19 accounted for 4.4% of all deaths in residential aged care between 15 December 2021 (the beginning of the Omicron outbreak) and 4 November 2023, indicate the sector has done well in protecting residents, one of the most vulnerable cohorts to the virus.
This week, the COVID-19 surge being experienced in the community was again felt in residential aged care.
As of 9 November 2023, there were 2,481 active COVID-19 cases (a 7% increase on the previous week) in residential aged care, affecting 334 facilities (a 14% increase).
There were 129 new outbreaks and 18 resident deaths recorded during the week – the highest number of fatalities in four months.
However, Department of Health and Aged Care data shows only 39% of aged care residents have received a booster dose in the last six months.
