Nearly 1,000 more aged care residents have caught COVID-19, with the virus in a further 85 homes.

A further 50 resident deaths have also been recorded in the past seven days.

As at 8pm on 13 April, there were 846 active outbreaks in residential aged care facilities across Australia, comprising 6,143 total cases. Of these, 3,545 cases are in residents and 2,598 cases are in staff.

Of the residents, 1,415 are in NSW, 867 in VIC, 562 in QLD, 274 in WA, 257 in SA, 154 in TAS, 12 in the ACT, and four in the NT. There are 1,056 staff infected with COVID in NSW, 487 in QLD, 328 in VIC, 311 in SA, 305 in WA, 80 in TAS, 30 in the ACT, and 10 in the NT.

There have now been 1,107 reported deaths of residents with COVID-19 in 2022 (a total of 2,024 since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic). More than 6,800 people in Australia have died of the virus.

Senator Richard Colbeck, Minister for Aged Care Services, said the distribution of the oral anti-viral Lagevrio (Molnupiravir) has helped manage the virus in residential aged care homes.

The National Medical Stockpile (NMS) has deployed 48,134 treatment courses of Lagevrio (Molnupiravir) to aged care homes.

However, many aged care homes have been forced to resume regular COVID-19 testing for staff and visitors in an effort to avoid COVID outbreaks.
