COVID-19 in aged care homes in NSW soars 107% as death rate hits 20

4 min read

Three more residents of NSW aged care homes have died of COVID-19 this week after the number of infections grew by 107% from the previous week.

A man, aged in his 90s, from Sydney’s west, who had two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, developed COVID-19 at Hardi Aged Care in Guildford, 20km west of Sydney's CBD, said NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant on Wednesday. He died in Westmead Hospital and had underlying health conditions. 28 residents have tested positive to COVID-19 at the facility.

On Monday, it was announced a man aged in his 90s died at Catholic Healthcare’s St Mary’s Villa aged care facility in Dubbo, 303km north-west of Sydney’s CBD. 11 residents at the facility have tested COVID-19 positive, including five at the weekend. Holy Spirit Dubbo aged care facility, which is also operated by Catholic Healthcare, has now recorded 12 resident cases.

A man, aged in his 80s, died at Nepean Hospital in Penrith, 55km west of Sydney’s CBD, after acquiring COVID-19 at Hawkesbury Living Aged Care Facility in Richmond, 63km northwest of Sydney’s CBD. He was the second COVID-19 death linked to the facility.

There is also concern in Sydney where a St Vincent de Paul Society of NSW spokesperson on Monday confirmed 18 men at its Frederic House facility at Waterloo, 3km south of Sydney’s CBD, had tested positive by Monday, following an exposure last week. Two staff members have also tested positive.

According to Federal Government data, released last Friday, Hawkesbury Living Nursing Home has the largest cluster of COVID-19 in aged care in NSW. There are 31 residents and 11 staff cases linked to the facility.

In total, there are 42 aged care homes with active cases of COVID-19 in residents and staff as the number of residents contracting the virus increased 107% in seven days.

On Wednesday, a Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District spokesman said a double dosed doctor, who had COVID-19, went into SummitCare Penrith, Anglicare Newmarch House and Mountainview Aged Care Penrith. Newmarch House, the site of NSW’s deadliest nursing home COVID-19 outbreak during the State’s first wave, has confined 32 residents. Three residents, who were identified as close contacts, have initially returned negative results.

As of 8am on Friday, there were 219 active cases in aged care facilities including 149 in residents – up from 72 resident cases in the previous week – and 73 active staff cases – an increase from 46 last week.
