Christian Homes Tasmania to replace ‘not fit for purpose’ aged care home with retirement village

1 min read

The Not For Profit has lodged plans with Kingborough Council to replace its first residential aged care facility, built almost 55 years ago, with 28 independent living units across two three-storey buildings.

All Urban Planning, engaged by Xsquared Architects, acting for Christian Homes Tasmania, wants to build 25 two-bedroom and three one-bedroom units at the site in Kingston, a town 12km south of Hobart's CBD.

The existing units are described as “at the end of life and no longer fit for purpose”, according to its report to council.

The plans also feature a central courtyard and a communal building with a shared kitchen, utility room and other amenities, with the new buildings to occupy around 54% of the 3,250sqm site.

Christian Homes Tasmania has also lodged plans for Pinnacle Village in Kingston and is pursuing new independent living units on other sites. In its 2023-2024 annual report, Chair Mark Hochman said, "financially our organisation is in a sound position, once again recording a surplus for the last financial year."
