NSW Planning Minister Paul Scully has signed an order declaring specified development on the Gymea Bowls site to be State Significant Development (SSD), enabling assessment at the State level rather than through local Council.
The proposal would redevelop Gymea Bowls – in Gymea, 26km south of the Sydney CBD – and six adjoining lots, upgrading club facilities and delivering about 250 apartments, including 130 independent living units typically provided in a retirement village format.
Gymea Miranda Bowling and Sports Club CEO Jason Fullerton told the St George Leader the plan is currently an Expression of Interest, with member consultation required before any public comment or commitments.
The adjoining properties – presently older houses – are owned by a private developer collaborating with the club on the scheme.
In 2024, approval was granted for medium-density housing (18 units over two levels with basement parking) on five of the adjoining properties.
