HammondCare to build $300M centre of excellence for complex older person care at Sydney’s Greenwich Hospital

1 min read

HammondCare will redevelop its Greenwich Hospital site into an integrated health campus combining sub-acute hospital services, dementia-specific residential care, older persons’ mental health, research, and seniors living – a $300-$350 million investment the Not For Profit says is the largest in its history.

HammondCare Greenwich will include a new sub-acute hospital with inpatient and outpatient palliative care, alongside an innovation and research hub housed in heritage-listed Pallister House under the banner Hammond Innovations.

Announcing the project with Northern Sydney Local Health District CEO Assoc. Prof. Anthony Schembri AM, Lane Cove Mayor Merri Southwood, Member for Lane Cove Anthony Roberts and HammondCare EGM Felicity Burns, CEO Andrew Thorburn said the campus realises HammondCare’s ambition to lead nationally in complex care for older people, especially dementia and palliative care.

“The new HammondCare Greenwich will be HammondCare’s flagship location, a place where world-class care and innovation come together in a way not seen in Australia to meet the challenges of complex care for older people,” he said.

A render of the planned development

What’s planned

  • 30 palliative care beds
  • 20 older persons’ mental health beds
  • 45 dementia-specific residential aged care beds (small-household model)
  • 20 health suites
  • A health hub and community services including ECT, imaging, pharmacy, chapel, café, gym, hydrotherapy pool and hairdresser
  • Two serviced seniors living buildings with 89 apartments, designed to support ageing in place

The seniors living apartments will target couples seeking independence with on-site health and care as needs change – among the first integrated models of this type in Australia.

Redevelopment will involve demolition of existing hospital buildings to make way for the new facilities. Construction commences immediately, with completion expected in 2029.
