Uniting gets go-ahead for 152-unit Shellharbour development

1 min read

Uniting NSW.ACT has secured approval for the first stage of its new Shellharbour development, which will deliver 152 independent living apartments and assisted living services in the Illawarra, about 100km south of Sydney’s CBD.

Stage one will comprise four buildings with a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, supported by community facilities and landscaped communal spaces. Under Uniting NSW.ACT’s continuum of care model, residents will be able to maintain independence with access to care services if and when required.

“We recognise the urgent need for high-quality seniors’ housing in Shellharbour, and Uniting Shellharbour will deliver exactly that, underlining our mission to put Australian seniors first,” Simon Furness, Director of Property and Housing at Uniting, said.

Sustainability is a central feature, with energy-efficient designs tailored to the local climate and landscaping that reflects the coastal surrounds.

“We’ve focused on harmonising the landscaping of the development with the local coastal aesthetic, to truly pay homage to the stunning natural surrounds, creating a place that residents would be proud to call home,” Simon said.

The development will also reserve 10% of apartments as affordable housing, ensuring seniors from diverse backgrounds can age in place near family and friends.

Stage one construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion targeted for winter 2028, pending further approvals from the Southern Joint Regional Planning Panel.
