University of Canberra planning on-campus aged care facilities

1 min read

The University of Canberra (UC) is looking for a partner to develop aged care services that will form part of an on-campus health hub, to help attract researchers, address local health needs, and deliver additional income streams.

“The University is in the second stage of proposals for an on-site aged care provider, home care provider and independent living unit operator to work collaboratively with UC as we explore opportunities across teaching, learning and research,” Hugh Howarth, Director of Campus Planning and Development, Campus Estate, told The SOURCE.

"Stage one of the market approach for proposals is now complete."

“The University is currently in the second stage of the request for proposals and we hope to have a strong understanding of the opportunities for UC and our possible collaboration partner/s in early 2024.”

As part of its 2020 Bruce Campus Master Plan, UC identified a 3-hectare parcel of land for a Residential Aged Care Facility, which could also house a parking station, supported living apartments and childcare facilities.

The UC health neighbourhood already includes the Health Hub, Canberra Specialist Medical Centre, and the University of Canberra Hospital, providing a range of services, including allied health, radiology, pharmacy, cancer treatment, and nursing services.

Other university campuses are also incorporating facilities for older people:

  • ACH Group’s Healthia aged care facility in Adelaide is part of a $40 million aged care, health and education hub developed by Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, the University of South Australia, and the City of Playford,
  • The University of Western Sydney has the 133-unit Caddens retirement village and the 102-bed aged care home Newmarch House on land it owns in Cadden, 48km west of the Sydney CBD,
  • Melbourne’s La Trobe University has plans to develop a world-class ‘University City of the Future’, including aged care services, and
  • Bolton Clarke is currently constructing Callisto Place retirement village neighbouring La Trobe University’s campus.
