Retirement Living Council pleased to see ageing now in Federal Government’s domain

1 min read

The Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s creation of an ageing portfolio is a major positive move for the retirement living sector, with Victorian MP Kate Thwaites, named the first Assistant Minister for Ageing.

The significance is the fact the new Assistant Minister’s portfolio is ageing, and not aged care, which is Anika Wells’ portfolio.

Retirement Living Council (RLC) Executive Director, Daniel Gannon, says “While industry operators understand the reality of the ‘silver tsunami’ that is fast approaching and what it could mean for housing markets, healthcare systems, workforces and communities, this awareness has historically been a challenge.

“And that’s not to say this ministerial decision is a silver bullet for this silver tsunami – but it’s a productive move at a critical time.”

The RLC has been active in Canberra, raising the village sector in particular as part of the ageing and care accommodation solution, recently meeting with the former Housing Minister Julie Collins, in Canberra.

“This is unadulterated good news and highly motivating and is a clear indication that the RLC’s thought leadership, advocacy and public messaging is cutting through,” said Daniel, who is pictured meeting with Senator Anne Ruston and Michael Sukkar, federal Shadow Ministers responsible for Health and Aged Care, Social Services, Housing, NDIS and Homelessness, in Adelaide last week.
