Retirement Living Council urges re-elected Labor Government to delay aged care reforms

The Retirement Living Council (RLC) is urging the re-elected Albanese Government to delay rollout of the new Aged Care Act, calling for urgent action “before it’s too late”.

Operators have told the Government they will not be ready for the 1 July transition, as the final details of the reforms are still being ironed out – with delays extended by the Federal Election.

In March, the RLC gave the Government six reasons to delay the reforms.

On Monday, RLC Executive Director Daniel Gannon said, “Serious issues surrounding liquidity standards, the critical overhaul of IT systems, a lack of training for staff, client anxiety over costings, and financial strain relating to billing remain unaddressed and threaten the viability of the sector."

“Nobody is questioning the need for a significantly improved aged care system. This is fundamental, especially as Australia’s population continues to age."

“However, we have a timeframe for the commencement of the new Act that just isn’t realistic – and that will benefit no-one.”

Daniel congratulated Prime Minister Albanese on his win, but said there are other reforms that need addressing to improve circumstances for older Australians, such as modernising the aged pension asset test settings and improving rent assistance.

“Given Australia’s demographics are shifting drastically, there’s no time to waste in resuming important policy reforms.”
