Illawarra aged care home evacuated due to fire
“There was a fire in a ceiling that was contained by the sprinkler system.”
Firefighters arrived at William Beach Gardens aged care facility on Kanahooka Road, Wollongong, 100km south of Sydney, just before 11am on Monday following reports of a fire.
“Smoke was issuing from the rear of the property,” said Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Superintendent Adam Dewberry, and residents were evacuated.
However, FRNSW Inspector Greg Purvis said the internal sprinkler system of the aged care home, which is operated by Not For Profit IRT, extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived.
“There was a fire in a ceiling that was contained by the sprinkler system,” he said. “They evacuated some people, but nobody was at risk and nobody injured.”
