New data from aged care consultancy Mirus reveals consumers have brought forward their decision to move into residential aged care to avoid higher charges under the new Aged Care Act.

There were 8,232 admissions into residential aged care in October, likely fuelled by consumers wanting to get into residential aged care under the previous payment rules and be grandfathered against the new 2% RAD retention fee.

Robert Covino, Mirus Founder and Partner, said, “When you look at September and October together, we saw around 15,000 permanent admissions, roughly the same number for the entire three month period from June through August.”

Reflecting the increase in admissions, occupancy rose two percentage points in October to 92.3%.

Samantha Jewell, CEO of Lifeview Residential Care, told The Weekly SOURCE that the operator, which has four homes in Melbourne, had seen a surge in demand for residential aged care ahead of the new Act.

“We had a big run before the 1st of November of people paying RADs wanting to move in,” she said.
