Speaking at the 2026 LEADERS SUMMIT, Amplar Health CEO Robert Read said Medibank-owned provider has reached a significant milestone in its Hospital in the Home program for SA Health.

More than 26,000 South Australian patients have now been treated under My Home Hospital, which operates across 190 postcodes and has delivered more than 117,684 hospital bed days in patients’ own homes.

On Day 2 of the SUMMIT, Robert said the program is now able to treat 250 conditions, up from five when the program first launched in 2021.

The program’s success demonstrates “very high acuity care” can be safely and successfully delivered in people’s homes, Robert said.

“We can run X-rays, pathology, oxygen and IV antibiotics into the home. We have our own team of paramedics. We have nurses going to the home, but it’s also supported by a national team of specialists and GPS that can work anywhere.”

From a clinical perspective, Hospital in the Home patients have a third of the hospital-acquired complications and a quarter of the readmissions. Net Promoter Scores are in excess of 90, and clinical outcomes have also improved under the prgram.

A KPMG analysis showed more than 30% of Australia’s current hospital patients could be safely looked after in the home – saving more than a million bed days and shaving $1 billion every year from the health Budget.

“Doing things differently can help reduce demand [on the health system], and reduce the spend which can then be reinvested,” Robert said.

AI and virtual care have emerged as key themes at the LEADERS SUMMIT 2026, with operators leveraging rapid advances to deliver more amid demographic pressures, funding constraints and workforce shortages.
