OneCare gets green light to build retirement village at Rubicon Grove in Port Sorell, TAS

The $45 million project by the Tasmanian Not For Profit will see 84 independent living units, 34 new beds at Rubicon Grove, a new community hub, staff accommodation, and car park built around the existing aged care home.

Rubicon Grove, located in the coastal town of Port Sorell, was originally built in 2009 and comprises 80 single rooms with ensuites, 12 adjoining rooms for couples and two respite rooms.

“It’s the first time we’ll be able to offer independent living units at Rubicon, which are an important option when it comes to providing older people with choice. Most of the units will be single level, with some multi-storey options," said OneCare’s Chief Business, Property & Retirement Living Officer Colin Stewart following the approval from Latrobe Council.

“As we get older and our care needs change, many prefer to downsize to a modern, low-maintenance unit in a retirement village. People can enjoy a sense of community, reduce the social isolation that’s a real issue for many as we age, and have ready access to home care – all while maintaining their independence."

Colin Stewart answers three questions on the future of the ageing sector

OneCare operates five aged care facilities in Tasmania and two retirement villages in Glenorchy and Kings Meadows.
