Living with dementia
Only in SATURDAY: dementia care underfunded in AN-ACC, aged care providers warn

Aged care providers are warning they may be unable to continue delivering care for residents living with dementia unless urgent gaps in funding are addressed.

Tom Symondson, CEO of Ageing Australia, told The Weekly SOURCE that the AN-ACC model fails to adequately cover the cost of caring for residents who are mobile but cognitively impaired (Class 3).

“These commonly include residents who, whilst mobile, have complex needs related to dementia which are not adequately recognised in the funding model," he said.

"It’s critical that providers are adequately funded to meet the varied and complex needs of people with dementia. Otherwise we won’t see the improvements in access to high quality care that our members advocate for."

Tom's comments follow our special dementia care edition of SATURDAY, published last Friday, which showed the cracks in the system are widening, with pressure on aged care, home care and retirement living intensifying.

"From unit closures to residents turned away, providers warn the business model is broken," wrote our editor Lauren Broomham.
