11 Victoria aged care homes recorded 36% of state’s COVID deaths, leaked State Government data reveals

The 11 aged care homes account for 245 of Victoria’s 683 coronavirus deaths or almost half (43%) of the 563 coronavirus deaths linked to aged care in Australia as of Tuesday.

The highest number of deaths recorded at a single home was 44, followed by 35 and 22 deaths at two other homes respectively.

The details were leaked after both the Federal and Victorian Governments declined to release the information for privacy reasons.

As we reported here, Federal Aged Care Minister, Senator Richard Colbeck, has previously stated that the Government would not publicly release the names of homes that have outbreaks because 80% of homes only have one confirmed case and they are “worried about reputational issues”.

Meanwhile the Andrews Government has stated it is up to the Federal Government to release the data, given it has responsibility for regulating aged care.

We have elected not to publish the names of the homes out of respect for the staff, other residents and families who are dealing with these terrible losses.
