Boomers Want Alternative to Nursing Home Future: Poll

‘Poll Shows Baby Boomers Want Alternate Nursing Homes,’ AAP, August 27, 2008.

The majority of Australia’s baby boomers have no intention of moving into a nursing home upon becoming frail, a new poll has found. Commissioned by The Benevolent Society, the Galaxy Poll surveyed 1,000 people aged over 50, 75 percent of which said they would move into a nursing home if it was the last resort, but expected governments to develop alternative forms of aged care. More than 80 percent of respondents wanted a new style of accommodation and care for older people, prompting chief executive of The Benevolent Society Richard Spencer to state: “These preferences are solid and widespread and send a strong message to governments… about what older Australians will be demanding over the next 10 to 15 years.”
