China triples its aged care homes in just five years – despite the Govt shutting down 2,000 ‘risky’ facilities

The Asian powerhouse had more than 144,600 aged care homes in September 2017 – a 226% increase on 2012 figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The huge increase led the Chinese government to launch a campaign in March last year to improve the quality of nursing homes, with over 40,000 inspected and almost 200,000 risks handled.

Interestingly, the figures also show the number of high-care beds has risen from below 30% in 2015 to 46.4% in 2017 – a sign that residents are getting older and frailer too.
