COVID-19 cases rising in Victorian aged care homes

Despite the moves to allow visitors back into aged care homes, COVID-19 outbreaks are still causing concern for facilities with a surge of cases occurring in Victoria this week.

As of 8am on 1 October 2021, there were 269 active cases of COVID-19 related to aged care across 39 residential aged care facilities. The total made up of 188 residents and 81 aged care workers with COVID-19. The previous week the total was 210 active cases in aged care residents.

At that time, three residents had died of COVID-19 in the aged care home at Calvary’s Haydon Retirement Community in Bruce, ACT. On Wednesday, ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said a woman, aged in her 70s, who was receiving end of life care at the home died overnight.

"This brings the number of lives lost due to COVID-19 to six for this outbreak," she said.

In Victoria, there are active COVID-19 outbreaks at:

  • Allity’s Glendale Aged Care Facility in Werribee, 32km southwest of Melbourne’s CBD;
