DCM Institute survey: only 58% of retirement Village Managers expect to be in role in three years’ time

New independent research from the DCM Institute has shone a light on the career plans of existing Village Managers – and many are looking for advancement.

In good news for retirement village operators, 58% of Village Managers intend to be in the same role in three years’ time, and 76% believe they will remain in the job for a year.

76% said they were satisfied with their current role – however, 38% are looking for an opportunity to advance their careers with their present employer.

“We often speak about attracting talented people into the sector,” James Wiltshire, Executive Director of the DCM Institute, noted. “We also need to speak about those talented people currently working in our communities, improving the lives of older Australians.”

“If we are serious about retaining these Village Managers, we need to support their career advancement through structured programs, continuous skill development, and specialised training,” James said.

Australia's largest retirement village operator Aveo told The Weekly SOURCE the role of Village Manager – or Community Manager as Aveo classify them – is the key role in the whole organisation.

"At Aveo we have our Management Development Academy to help support and upskill people in their current roles of Community Manager and Assistant Community Manager. As well as prepare them for career opportunities within the organisation should they be interested in a pathway to senior leadership with the operations team or to another area of Aveo they may be interested in," said a spokeswoman.

"The Aveo Management Development Academy has the pure objective of enhancing the leadership capability within Aveo. The curriculum and approach have been developed based on research and consultation with various Aveo management representatives, and the Aveo Management Development Framework that has been adopted draws on the work done by the Property Council of Australia and the Retirement Living Council."
