The vacant Sporties Club at Belmont, 20km from the Newcastle CBD on Lake Macquarie, could be home to a 90-bed aged care home to be run by aged care provider Arcare and 120 to 130 independent living units if a developer gets their wish.

Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking permission from the NSW Government to start community consultation on a plan to allow seniors housing at the site, which was placed in voluntary administration in February 2018.

Seniors housing is currently permitted at one of the two lots on the site, where the bowling greens are located, but the Government and Council would need to approve the change for the plans to go ahead.

A Traffic Impact Assessment Report concludes the site is well situated for seniors housing, as it is within walking distance of retail and commercial services, community services, recreational facilities, medical practices and public transport services.

The plan also seeks to increase the building height from 8.5 metres to 10 metres over both lots to build the three-storey aged care home on the site.
