‘NIMBYs’ to blame for failed aged care expansion: SA operator

Terry Snell had applied to the State Government in September to expand the 32-bed St. George’s Nursing Home in Fitzroy, 4km from the Adelaide CBD, to 74 beds in a project he said was valued at $21M.

It was accepted as a major development under the SA Government’s fast-tracked assessment scheme which was recently dumped, but Mr Snell withdrew his application before then.

He’s told Adelaide Now that he does not know what he will do next, saying NIMBYs would oppose his plans no matter what.

Several neighbours had opposed a previous application to expand the facility and had been preparing to campaign against this latest redevelopment.

Prospect Residents Association president Elizabeth Crisp denied the neighbours’ opposition had anything to do with NIMBYism however.

“It’s do with the fact it’s the wrong place for an expanded nursing home,” she said.

Where is the right place for an aged care home that serves a local demand then?
