Proposed retirement village for Port Douglas derailed by Council ‘planning’ opposition

The $60M village to be built by Waks Developments would see vacant land off Ferrero Road transformed into a 160-home community including a gym, swimming pool and cafes.

There are currently no retirement villages in Port Douglas, despite there being land zoned for villages.

Last year, developer Steve Thomas said over 500 submissions have been sent to Council in support of the project.

However, the Mayor and majority of the Council opposed the Waks development as it is west of the Captain Cook Highway.

A planning scheme will now be submitted to the State Government for approval with the possibility of making additional land available for the retirement village.
