A large group of local residents have come together to protest a proposed Ryman Healthcare retirement village development at Mount Eliza, 62km south of Melbourne.

The New Zealand based developer submitted a development application for a multi building 181-apartment retirement village, with 48 assisted living suites and 82 aged care beds on the former Ansett Estate on Kunyung Road.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal is holding a major case hearing from March 15-19, with protestors saying the development would be a “disaster” for the local environment.

The group have named their campaign “Save Reg’s Wedge” after late businessman and aviator, Sir Reginald Ansett, whose former estate is the location of the proposed development, The News Mornington Peninsula reported.

Interestingly next door is open country (pictured right) owned by retirement village veteran Chas Jacobsen who actually owns Sir Reginald Ansett’s home. He purchased the vacant land next door in 2018 for a rumoured $33 million to safeguard his view and privacy.

Ryman Healthcare contend that the proposal is an appropriate development which wouldn’t impact negatively on the local environment.
