Royal Commission witness charged with manslaughter after death of 89-year-old aged care resident

A 60-year-old former aged care resident appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court last week, following the assault and death of an 89-year-old woman in a Canberra aged care home.

Mario Amato – who appeared at last year’s Royal Commission hearing into younger people in aged care – pleaded not guilty to the charge of manslaughter.

This follows an extensive investigation which saw Amato arrested on 24 March this year.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said the incident occurred on 14 November 2018, when the woman and man were both residents at a facility in Campbell.

The woman suffered a number of injuries including a fractured hip. She was treated by paramedics and transported to hospital, where she died on 4 December 2018.

Amato had moved into the facility after suffering a stroke-induced injury to his frontal lobe.

Mr Amato is free on bail and expected to be back in court in August.
