US: over 1,000 aged care residents and staff to be shown the door by mass nursing home shutdown

Interesting what is happening elsewhere in the world. Five aged care facilities in the state of Massachusetts have filed a notice to close their doors, blaming inadequate government funding and warning that more closures are possible.

According to state cost report data, each home was operating at a significant loss with most residents having their care paid for under the government’s Medicaid funding. It’s estimated over 50% of the state’s nursing homes run at a loss.

Massachusetts currently spends around $1.7B on nursing home care for about 30,000 residents – this is 20% less per resident than Australia.
