At the time, then-Mayor Michael Kerr said that following Douglas Shire Council’s approval of Obray’s 41 single-storey, one-and-two bedroom independent living units – ranging from 200msq to 350msq – he believed it was “a fantastic development for our slice of paradise.”
Approval for the retirement village on the 1.75ha of land between Oaks Port Douglas Resort and the Reef Resort Villas was granted in December 2020.

Now Obray directors Paul O’Brien and Daniel Gray have lodged plans with the Council to divide the 1.7ha site into seven large blocks for about 40 individual allotments in a high-end gated community.
“The development intent of the site is for a gated community containing a mix of housing options ranging from stand-alone dwellings, villas and attached townhouses as generally depicted on the concept site plan prepared by Hunt Design,” the DA states.
A body corporate-style management of the lots is proposed and as the project progresses its expected material change of use and reconfiguration permits will be submitted to council.
The proposed development is considered code assessable due to suitable sized lots complying with the Medium Density Residential Zone outlined in the Port Douglas/Craiglie Local Plan.
