The peak body for the property industry is urging the Albanese Government to include land lease communities in its national housing targets.

In July, the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed Australia is already more than 60,000 homes behind after the first year of the National Housing Accord.

Property Council Chief Executive Mike Zorbas said every older Australian living in a land lease community is one less person competing for an apartment or house in the country’s tight rental markets.

“These (land lease communities) provide affordable, secure homes for ‘rightsizers’, retirees and key workers. They offer high-quality housing at lower prices and free up larger dwellings for families. They bring gentle density and diversity to our housing mix,” Mike said in a statement.

“Purpose-built and professionally managed land lease communities revitalise regional towns and underused land. They create jobs and attract residents, all without drawing on public funds.

“The federal government treats them as a huge housing target zero, even while ticking retirement villages off the list. It’s a head-scratching policy flip-flop.

“The message for the Federal and National Cabinets is a simple one. If we are to meet our 1.2 million home target, every home must count.”
