The 37 year old former nurse convicted of murdering 11 residents in a 2011 fire at Quakers Hill nursing home has been jailed for life without parole. Roger Dean pleaded guilty to 11 counts of murder and eight of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm after wilfully setting fire to the home. Judge Megan Latham of the New South Wales Supreme Court said Dean had a reckless indifference to human life and conducted himself in a self-serving manner. Dean used a cigarette lighter to start fires in two beds then watched them take hold. Of the 88 residents who were in the home, some died in the fire and others from their injuries. Over 100 friends and relatives of victims packed the public gallery, some with photos of their loved ones pinned to their jackets. One relative spoke of the guilt they feel at having put their loved one in the home. Many of the victims' family members cried and applauded wen the sentence was handed down. Dean said nothing before he was led away.
