Community pushes back on RSL LifeCare medium rise village & care expansion at Kaleen, ACT

RSL LifeCare has met community opposition on revised plans for its retirement village and aged care site at Kaleen, in the ACT.

The operator is looking to add two new buildings to the 17,257sqm site, already home to the two-storey Mona Tait Gardens residential aged care home and the three-storey Bullecourt Retirement Village ILUs.

As reported in Riotact, the new development application would see building heights raised to four and six storeys; the addition of three new units for a total of 93; and increased floor space to fit more two- and three-bedroom units. 99 car spaces will also be added, with 80 underground and 19 above ground.

Kaleen locals are objecting to the revised plans, however, with one submission saying they are out of character for the area; it calls for the development to be limited to 90 units and one of the buildings capped at three storeys.

“We recommend that it is time to rethink the whole project and to return to a more modest development in keeping with the character of the local area and a better balance between the needs of the developer and those of the local residents,” the submission read.

RSL LifeCare first announced the development, including its existing buildings, in 2016.
