Respect gets helping hand for latest regional aged care home renovation
The Not For Profit aged care, home care and retirement living operator is embarking on a two-stage refurbishment of Hudson House in Cooma, 155km south of Canberra, after a $5 million Commonwealth Government grant.
The $7.12 million refurbishment will commence this month, and forms part of Respect’s broader campaign to modernise aged care facilities across regional Australia and expand aged care capacity in the Snowy Monaro Region.
Stage 1 of Hudson House will involve converting shared rooms into individual rooms with ensuites, providing residents with improved comfort and privacy, and aligning the home with contemporary expectations.
The project also includes a wellbeing office, upgraded hair salon, and improved central courtyard. Stage 1 is expected to take seven to eight months, and is supported by the Government grant.

Stage 2 of the project will include a new wing and additional aged care beds.
Hudson House, which opened in 1981, currently only has 36 beds filled, with the east wing closed for the refurbishment. Respect, which specialises in turning around regional aged care homes experiencing financial hardship, took on the facility in 2023.
Respect CEO and Managing Director, Jason Binder, said the redevelopment ensures the home meets “modern expectations for comfort, privacy and wellbeing” while supporting the long-term needs of older people in the Snowy Monaro region.
Respect undertaking series of refurbishments
The Weekly SOURCE reported last month Respect is already spending $2.7 million to refurbish Cohuna Village, 274km north of Melbourne’s CBD. Construction begins on 16 February 2026, and will see 34 resident rooms, including bathrooms, modernised and refurbished over a two-year project period.
This follows a $17 million expansion and refurbishment of Avonlea Aged Care Home in Nhill, in the Wimmera region, 340km northwest of Melbourne, in November last year; and a $5 million refurbishment of Edward Collick Home in Kalgoorlie, 600km east of Perth, last December.
Respect was founded in 1922. Under Jason’s leadership, a Chartered Accountant, the operator has grown rapidly and now has 4o aged care facilities, acquiring 12 in the last year alone.
