St Andrew’s Village Ballina to be reborn in $20M-plus plan
St Andrew's Village Ballina will be rebuilt with 77 independent living units, five residential care beds, 10 hostel beds, ancillary communal facilities, and parking.
The community-based organisation founded in 1983 has lodged a State Significant Development Application (SSDA) to demolish its existing facility in the NSW Northern Rivers and rebuild St Andrew’s Village Ballina.
A report by Urbis states the 18,169sqm site will be redeveloped to deliver 77 independent living units, five residential care beds, 10 hostel beds, ancillary communal facilities and parking. The new village would be housed in buildings ranging from one to three storeys.
Belinda Thomas, Associate Director at Urbis, said the SSDA qualifies for industry-specific SEARs because:
- the proposed land use is wholly permissible
- the proposal does not meet the threshold for designated development
- the application is not a concept DA and seeks detailed consent for construction and operation on the site
In January, The Weekly SOURCE reported St Andrew’s Village Ballina had taken on the 41-bed Byron Aged Care home in Byron Bay, 35km north of its base. It also assumed control of Feros Care’s former 40-bed aged care home at Byron Bay in January 2024, renaming it George’s Cottages.
